As a new academic year begins, classrooms across Rwanda will once again fill with the sounds of learning, friendship, curiosity, and ambition. For many learners, returning to school is a moment of excitement. It is the beginning of new lessons, new challenges, and new possibilities. But for some, the journey back to the classroom is not quite as simple.
When a learner lacks essential school materials, adequate nutrition, appropriate support, or a stable environment in which to learn, the challenge can extend far beyond the classroom. What should be an exciting beginning can become another reminder of circumstances they did not choose.
HIRO Foundation believes that a learner’s opportunity to learn should not be determined by those circumstances.
CREATING AN INSPIRING START
On 03 September 2026, HIRO Foundation will bring its Back to School 2026 initiative to Kirinda, from 10:00 to 13:00, as part of its continued commitment to supporting learners and contributing to stronger educational opportunities within communities. The initiative is not simply about marking the beginning of another school term.
It is about creating a moment in which learners feel seen, valued, encouraged, and ready to move forward. A stronger start can take many forms. It can be having the materials needed to participate confidently in class. It can be knowing that someone cares about your progress. It can be receiving encouragement at a moment when you need it most.
Sometimes, meaningful change begins with something very simple: giving a learner the confidence to believe that they belong in the classroom and that their future is worth working for.
BEHIND EVERY LEARNER IS A POSSIBILITY
Every learner carries something that cannot be measured by their current circumstances. Potential. Some discover their passion early. Others need time, encouragement, and exposure before they understand what they are capable of. A child who is quietly solving problems in a classroom may one day become an engineer. A learner who loves helping classmates may discover a calling in education or healthcare. Another may find their strength in technology, creativity, leadership, science, entrepreneurship, or service.
We cannot always know where a young person’s abilities will take them. But we can help create the conditions in which those abilities have the opportunity to develop.
Talent deserves a chance to shine.
A MESSAGE TO OUR LEARNERS
To every learner returning to school:
Do not allow today’s challenges to convince you that tomorrow is out of reach. Your journey may not look like someone else’s. You may have to work harder for some of the things others receive more easily. There may be moments when you feel uncertain, discouraged, or overlooked.
Keep going.
Take your studies seriously. Ask when you do not understand. Learn from your mistakes. Respect those who guide you. Be curious. Be disciplined. And never be ashamed of having a dream. Your education is an investment in a future that you are still writing.
Your story is not limited to where you begin.
EDUCATION IS A COLLECTIVE RESPONSIBILITY
A learner’s success is rarely achieved alone.
Behind a child who progresses through school are often parents making sacrifices, teachers giving their time, school leaders creating opportunities, community members offering encouragement, and partners investing resources. This is why HIRO Foundation believes in working alongside communities rather than working apart from them.
When we support a learner, we strengthen more than one individual.
We strengthen a family’s hope. We strengthen a school’s capacity to nurture potential. And we contribute to a community’s future.
MORE THAN ONE DAY
The Back to School initiative is one moment within a much longer journey.
HIRO Foundation’s commitment is to continue encouraging educational participation, supporting vulnerable learners, nurturing talent, and creating opportunities that allow young people to develop with dignity and confidence. The beginning of a school year gives us an opportunity to ask an important question:
What can we do today to make tomorrow more possible for a learner?
Our answer is simple:
We show up. We listen. We support. We empower. And we continue working toward an education environment in which talent can be recognized and given room to grow.
